PerformancePoint Server 2007 now comes with SharePoint Enterprise Microsoft will release SP3 in fall of 2009 Licensing concerns: PerformancePoint Services for SharePoint will be released with next version of SharePoint

5 Performance Management
Assess progress toward achieving predetermined goals Monitor Use dashboards, scorecards See what is currently happening Analyze Answer the questions – why is this red? Plan What will happen in the future?

6 Performance Management
Problems with current implementation of perf management Difficult to use Many moving parts Manual consolidation of data Error-prone Narrowly deployed in departmental silos Unable to change with the business SLOW! Problems can often be created by combinations of Excel, Access, Outlook, etc.

7 PerformancePoint Server
Microsoft's answer to performance management Combines Business Scorecard Manager, Proclarity, and new component: Planning 3 pieces: Monitoring & Analytics Server Proclarity Planning Server

8 PerformancePoint Demo

9 Monitoring & Analytics
What we’re going to talk about today Portal based dashboard server Dashboard Designer

10 Dashboard Designer Used to develop dashboards and elements
Uses the Office 2007 format Ribbon Pearl For business analysts, not developers Does not incorporate into Visual Studio No built-in source control capabilities

11 Creating a Dashboard Create a workspace Create elements
Configure elements Configure scorecard Configure dashboard Deploy dashboard

12 Elements: Data Sources
Used for KPIs, scorecards, and reports Types: Multidimensional (Analysis Services) Tabular List (SharePoint, SQL Server, Excel 2007) Standard Queries (ODBC Connection) Time Intelligence

13 Elements: KPIs KPI: Key Performance Indicator
Total KPI consists of an actual value and one or more targets Begin with an objective Increase profitability Develop the quantitative measure of an objective Gross sales Or Production costs Set your goal or target

14 Elements: KPIs Create KPIs directly in the dashboard
Can create objectives, which group related KPIs This creates a hierarchy of KPIs Parents KPIs’ values are determined by children using different methods, i.e. Average of Children, Min of Children, etc. Leaf-level standard, non-leaf-level standard, non-leaf-level objective Set thresholds to determine the target levels

15 Elements: Reports To be included in dashboard for further analysis
Types: Analytic chart Analytic grid Reporting Services (that have been deployed to the Report Manager) PivotChart PivotTable Spreadsheet Strategy Map Web Page Trend Analysis Chart

16 Elements: Scorecards Collection of KPIs and objectives, can be arranged in a hierarchical fashion Used to measure organization performance Can create Balanced Scorecards Types: Analysis Services Fixed Value Excel 2007 Excel Services SQL Tabular SharePoint List

17 Dashboards Container that puts everything together
Deployed to SharePoint Each dashboard has its own page Contains zones, similar to a SharePoint page

18 Filters Also can contain filters, such as: Set of members MDX formula
Named Set Tabular values Time Intelligence members Time Intelligence Post Formula Filters can link to reports and scorecards

19 Building a Dashboard Demo

20 Security Four roles in the Dashboard Designer: Admin Creator
Access to create, edit, and delete all dashboard elements Access to publish dashboards to the server Creator Access to create report, KPIs, scorecards, and indicators Power Reader Read-only access to all dashboard elements Data Source Manager Access to create, delete, and publish data sources
