The Law of Conservation of Matter – matter cannot be created nor destroyed, but may change form.

Precipitate– a solid formed by the reaction of two solutions. Supernatant Liquid– liquid layer above the precipitate after it settles. Decant– to pour off the liquid layer while retaining the solid.

Filter- to separate the parts of a mixture by mechanical means (as with filter paper). Filtrate– liquid which has passed through the filter.

Setup for Heating & Filtering Set small iron ring about 6” above the table and the large ring 3”-5” higher than your Bunsen burner.

Setup for Heating & Filtering Light burner out from under the ring stand, then slide it under the stand. Do NOT adjust ring height with beaker sitting on the stand.
