1 Raksha bandhan

2 What is Raksha Bandhan’s significance?
Raksha Bandhan in Sanskrit literally means the tie or knot of protection. The word raksha means protection while bandhan is the verb to tie. It is an ancient hindu festival celebrated in India. It celebrates the love between brothers and sisters. The sister performs a rakhi ceremony, then prays to express her love and wish for the well being of her brother. In return, the brother ritually pledges to protect and take care of his sister under all circumstances. It is one of the several occassions in which family ties are affriemed in India.

3 What does Raksha Bandhan mean?
Raksha bandhan means bond of protection. Sisters tie rakhis to their brothers and promise to protect them. Brothers too promise their sisters that they will protect them. Then they share blessings and gifts among themselves and everyone.

4 From which incident did raksha bandhan started
According to the Bhavishya Purana, in the war between gods and demons, Indra, the diety of sky, rain and thunderbolts was disgraced by the powerful demon King Bali. Indra’s sister Sachi consulted Vishnu, who gave her a bracelet made of cotton thread calling it holy. Sachi tied the holy thread around Indra’s wrist, blessed with her prayers for his well being and success. Indra successfully defeated Bali and recovered Amravati. This inspired the protective power of the holy thread. This holy thread was called Rakhi. This was how Raksha Bandhan introduced.
