Problem statement Brief history of [digital] research data management (RDM) Rationale for preservation-related staff Institutional case study To-do list for campus discussions Tools & other resources
3
Problem: Campus RDM Brief history:
1989: WWW invented by Tim 1993: WWW to Public Domain : NIH OA publishing in PMC requirement 2009: 4th Paradigm (describe, generalize, simulate, unify) : NSF Data Management Plan requirement 2013: OSTP expands OA requirement to all federally funded projects : Publishers’ CHORUS and ARL’s SHARE

RDM Staffing: Why Library Preservation as a Source?
Been there: Years of experience (on the heels of Berners-Lee) Familiarity with scale (microfilming, mass digitization) Handling mixed data types/formats (even weird stuff) Making mistakes and knowing how to recover (.pcd) Routing master/access (without ideal solutions in hand) Job description revamping (to include digital) Recent success with more adequate tools, standards, best practices (TDR/TRAC) So, Big Data V’s: volume, variety, velocity, veracity
5
Case Study: UConn 1990’s: Early digital projects 2001: .pcd project
: JPEG 2000 project 2005: [Digital] Preservation Librarian hired 2006: Institutional Repository (IR) [1st phase] : Internet Archive mass digitization 2010- : RDM Workshops & 1:1 Consultations 2014- : Islandora Repository

RDM To-Do List If not involved, find out if your preservation experience might be needed, tuning in to Subject specialists Grants office staff Central IT To help at point of need, compile local resources list for Active data Static data Based on resources’ restrictions, chart decisions

Active Data Working Space Decisions (see handout versions)
