1 The Rise of Terror

2 Hadith A collection of traditions containing sayings of the prophet Muhammad that, with accounts of his daily practice (the Sunna), constitute the major source of guidance for Muslims apart from the Qur’an.

3 Sharia Law An idea that states that the laws of man and the laws of God should be the same. If a country lives under Sharia Law, then the laws of the land come directly from the Qur’an and the Hadith. Would this be a good thing or a bad thing?

4 Fundamentalist v Extremist
a person who believes in the strict, literal interpretation of scripture in a religion. =Fundamentalist a person who holds extreme or fanatical political or religious views, especially one who resorts to or advocates extreme action. =Extremist Are they the same?

5 Jihad “Striving” or the Struggle. Internal or External
Internal=Relationship between you and God and your struggle to be better. External=defending Islam with the mouth, pen, or the sword.

6 Terrorism the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.

7 So… Fundamentalist Extremist Muslims believe that Sharia Law is the only law, and that God wants the whole world to live under the laws of the Qur’an and the Hadith. In order to achieve that, they have to execute jihad against the enemies of Islam. They also believe that the most effective way to do this is through terrorism.

8 Major Terrorist Groups
Mujahideen – warriors fighting to defend fellow Muslims. Also known as guerrilla fighters in Islamic countries, especially those who are fighting against non-Muslim forces.

9 Al Qaeda Origin was to combat the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
Funded and founded by Osama Bin Laden in the eighties Osama Bin Landen responsible for 9/11 Moved to Saudi Arabia after Soviets withdrew Drive Americans and American influence out of all Muslim nations, especially Saudi Arabia, destroy Israel, and end pro-Western dictatorships around the Middle East Unite all Muslims and establish, by force if necessary, an Islamic nation adhering to the rule of the first Caliphs

10 Taliban Emerged in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of Soviet troops
Founded by Mullah Mohammed Omar Controlled nearly 90% of Afghanistan in Driven from power by a United States led coalition after 9/11 Promised peace, security, and their version of Sharia Law while in power Support public executions of convicted murderers and adulterers. Amputations of those found guilty of theft Ban television, music, movies, and disapprove of girls ten and over attending school

12 ISIS Islamic State of Iraq and Syria also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant Founded by Abu Masab al-Zarqawi Today led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi Believed to have become more radicalized due to the United States invasion of Iraq As government troops began to overtake the opposition in Syria during the civil war, ISIS, rich with weapons and cash, moved in and took control of several towns in northeast Syria
