32 species of freshwater mussels 10 aquatic snails They can best be protected from effects from forestry operations by protecting water quality and streambed habitat. Following BMP’s for forestry closely will help ensure that impacts are minimized.

28 Fishes There are currently 11 fish species listed as threatened or endangered in Alabama. Most of them occur in north Alabama rivers and streams. The single biggest problem affecting protected fish that could result from forestry practices is sedimentation which smothers fish eggs and habitat.
