1 Respiratory system By: Jennifer Martinez, Michelle Garcia, Angie Ramirez, Karina Rea, and Omar Miranda.

2 WHAT IS THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM ?
The Respiratory system is made up of the organs in your body that help you to breathe. The main organ of the Respiratory system will be your lungs.

3 VOCABULARY WORDS: 1. Pharynx - membrane cavity behind the nose and mouth, connecting them to the esophagus(canal that connects the throat and stomach) Larynx - muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs and holding the vocal cords; Voice box trachea - a.k.a windpipe, filters air we breathe and branches into the bronchi; membranous tube, extending from larynx to the bronchial tubes and conveying air to and from the lungs Lungs - organs situated within the rib cage, consisting of elastic sacs with branching passages into which air is drawn, oxygen can pass into the blood and carbon dioxide be removed.

4 5. Bronchus (bronchi) - two air tubes that branch off of the trachea
5. Bronchus (bronchi) - two air tubes that branch off of the trachea and carry air directly into the lungs Bronchioles(Bronchial)Tubes - located in your lungs, these tubes let air in and out of your lungs, so you can breathe Alveoli - tiny air sacs in the lungs where they exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place.

5 Steps of the Respiratory System :
Breathing Starts at your nose and mouth, when inhaling air (Oxygen) it will travel through your nose or mouth. The oxygen will through your nose, were the air is mouistered, warmth, and filtered. And go to the nasal cavity and down to the pharynx. The pharynx (is a canal that connects with the throat), the oxygen will then travel down to the larynx (voice box and forms a air passage to the lungs). Oxygen will go through the trachea (is a form like tube, where the air is being conveyed(transport) to the lungs). Once the air is being transported to the lungs, it will travel to the bronchus (two air tubes branching off the trachea carrying air directly to the lungs).

6 Once the oxygen goes through the bronchus it will then go to the bronchiole tubes (located in your lungs, these tubes let air in and out of your lungs, so you can breathe). At the of the bronchiole, there are alveoli. In the capillaries, and inside the capillaries there is alveoli (tiny air sacs in the lungs where they exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide). Alveoli are surrounded by a tiny blood vessels called capillaries.

7 Question 1: What is the importance of Cilia ? Cilia is important because they filter out dust or other particles to prevent harm inside your body. Cilia are also found in your air passages, which help sweep unwanted particles, and clean the air passages. Cilia prevent harmful substances.

8 The flow of oxygen & Deoxygenated blood in the circulatory system

9 How is oxygen carried in the blood ?
Oxygen is carried in the blood by Red blood Cells, and remove waste which is Carbon Dioxide through the body. Inside the Red Blood Cells there is a protein called Hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is made up of iron which transports oxygen through the lungs and through the whole body.

10 *In this picture you can see the oxygen from the inhaled air passes through the alveoli walls and into the blood. After absorbing oxygen, the blood leaves the lungs and is carried to your heart. Your heart then pumps it through your body to provide oxygen to the cells of your tissues and organs. As the cells use the oxygen, carbon dioxide is produced and absorbed into the blood. Your blood then carries the carbon dioxide back to your lungs, where it is removed from the body when you exhale.*

11 What happens to someone who has anemia ?
Sickle cell anemia produces a deformed hemoglobin protein, which deforms the red blood cells. The red blood cell is no longer thick, soft, and round, it is not hard, sticky and sharp. It’s in the shape of a sickle, a type of curved ax. A person that has anemia would have a lack of oxygen and protein in their body. Oxygen is not being transported properly throughout the body. Red blood cells are being lost quickly , the body is producing red blood cells slowly, or the body is destroying the red blood cells. This is a mutation that the person has in their DNA, causing them to have anemia.

12 Which side of the heart is bigger and why ?
The left side of your Heart is bigger. Why ? Because since a big amount of air (Oxygen) goes through your Pulmonary Vein, Veins carry blood back to the heart. Oxygenated Blood always goes on the left side of your heart which is the left atria, and left ventricle. Since the left side of your heart connects with the Aorta, which delivers blood through your body. The left side must me bigger because it has to deliver blood to your whole body, which is the aortas job.
