We Are What We Eat: Food Labels and Nutrition
2
Macromolecules Macromolecules make up all the food we consume!
Carbohydrates Lipids Proteins These macromolecules give us energy to live!
3
How do we get energy? The food we consume give us energy in the form of Calories. Calorie: the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1°C Remember: heat=energy
4
Food Labels All manufactured foods are required by law to have a food label. What information can we get from a food label? Total calories in the food How much Fat, carbohydrates and protein the food contains Essential vitamins Daily percent
5
Using Food Labels Each macromolecule provides our bodies with a certain amount of calories. Carbohydrates: 4 calories per gram Protein: 4 calories per gram Fats: 9 calories per gram We can use these values to calculate the breakdown of calories!
6
How? You multiply the number of grams by the amount of calories it provides. Add them together to get the total amount of calories for the food your eating.
7
Carbohydrates Total Carbohydrates: 19.66 grams
Calories provided: 4 per gram 19.66 X 4 = Calories
8
Fats Total Fat: 0.56 grams Calories provided: 9 per gram
0.56 X 9 = 8.64 Calories
9
Proteins Total Protein: 1.24 grams Calories provided: 4 per gram
1.24 X 4 = 4.96 Calories
