AP 2D Studio Art
2
Are you interested in an art related career or just love art?
Would you like to take a college credit art course while at BHS and boost your high school GPA with AP credit? Have you already taken Art I and Art II? Then AP Art may be for you!
3
What is AP Art? Students in AP art will create a 24 piece art portfolio. 12 pieces (Breadth) will be created to show your range of artistic growth and you can use artwork you already have. 12 pieces with be created with a consistent theme or area of concentration (Area of Concentration). The first week in May, all 24 pieces will be submitted digitally to the College Board for scoring. You will also mail in your best 5 actual pieces out of those 24. You will also write and submit an artist statement. The College Board scoring determines if you receive college level credit. Your work will be graded for your high school AP credit. So…you get both an AP elective credit for high school AND an art/elective credit that will transfer to college.

What will I do in AP Art? You will be putting together a portfolio with 24 quality art pieces. AP Art is VERY individualized depending on you need to fill out your portfolio. You will get to pick what you want to do for your 12 concentration pieces. You will be working very independently throughout the school year. Participation in individual and group critiques for each work is required. A sketchbook is required. Summer assignments will be given. It is expected you will need to budget several hours outside of class time each week to complete your portfolio in time for the May deadline.

What is the best way to get ready for AP Art?
Look at all the artwork you have done over the last several years and pick out the best pieces. (No 3-D work, only 2-D). See if you have 12 strong artworks. Criteria: NO work accepted for AP if your reference was printed off the internet and you gridded or traced it exactly as it was. This is considered plagiarism. Only consider work that is ORGINAL. (It is okay to use references but they can only be part of the final work and changed significantly from the original.) Also, check the sizes. The maximum size work for AP is 18 x 24. Minimum is 8 x 10. This includes the mat.

What is the best way to get ready for AP Art?
If you don’t have 12 artworks or need to touch up existing work, that is a great place to start now on your AP art portfolio. If you start AP with at least 8 strong pieces of finished art than you will be right on track. These will be the 12 Breadth pieces. They can be any 2-D media or materials and any subject matter. (Paintings, Drawings, Photographs, Computer generated, Collage, Printmaking, etc…). There should be a variety to show off your range of work.
