AMCOM Digital Archive Design Review Week 1
2
Problem to be Solved Propulsion and Structures Directorate generates about 1 TB of data each year from various forms of testing Currently there is no system in place to efficiently organize or store the generated data This leads to the loss of or unknown whereabouts of previous test data
3
Solution Engineer a digital archive system to allow all of the test data to be easily stored in a digital format Leverage the power of computers to manage the large amount of data Allow users to easily search and retrieve previously entered data
4
Requirements Definition Phase
5
Work Completed to Date Team Formulation Bill Whiteley Jostin Crass
Project Manager, Software Development Jostin Crass Hardware, Project Website Jonathan Ahlbin Software, Hardware Jonathan Suggs Hardware, Software Josh Saddler
6
Work Complete To Date Initialization of Contact with Sponsor
Jay Lilly – Big Chief George Arkoosh – Little Chief (Main Contact) Richard Campbell – Network / Security Leah Irrgang – Information Technology
7
Initial Tele-Conference
Conducted with George, Richard, and Leah to begin requirements definition Security must be prominent in design All communication protocols must be of the secure type Secure FTP for file transfers SSL for network communication Team members working on software must sign a affidavit stating that there are no backdoors, trojan horses or other malicious code in the software. All code must be certified by a security committee
8
Trip to Amcom Huntsville
Conducted on Oct 19, 2004 Met with all key members at Amcom Toured the facility Observed where the tests are conducted, how the data is collected and currently what is done with the data after the test are complete Saw where the new digital archive system will be installed
9
Trip to Amcom Huntsville
Discussed General Requirements Budget of $20,000 maybe $25,000 System will be part of larger Propulsion Directorate intranet Leah will design all graphics for application interface The system must be able to be completely backed up and moved offsite The test data must be available for retrieval forever Files can be over 1 GB (High Speed Camera) Generates 1 TB of data each year so it would be nice if they did not have to buy more storage for a couple of years
10
Trip to Amcom Huntsville
More General Requirements System must be easy to use and not intimidating System must be modular so they can increase the storage capacity as required Would like to have the system 4-6 weeks prior to the end of year so any bugs that popup can be fixed System should incorporate an encoding station Application interface requirements are being developed by George Arkoosh and will be delivered sometime in the future
11
Trip to Amcom Huntsville
Other Comments Sugg’s car is way too nice, he should be driving a station wagon Must deliver a hardware and software list to Amcom as soon as is feasible so they can start the process of purchasing the needed items. The people at Amcom are not the most computer savy people and they often have a tough time explaining what they want and speaking the technical language of conputers
12
Preliminary Solution Research
Hardware Research Tape Backup Systems are expensive Data Storage systems are expensive Servers are expensive Software Research Software is expensive
13
The Upcoming Week(s) Develop Hardware Solution Software Solution
Develop solutions that fit within the $20,000 budget May have to adjust the hardware requirements to fit the budget Software Solution If software requirements appear, begin to develop the software solution Project Website Begin/post project website
