2 “Trustbuster” page 657 Trust: several companies join together.
President Roosevelt supported the regulation of business by government. Keep businesses from becoming too STRONG!!! He used the Sherman Antitrust Act to regulate trusts.

3 “Trustbuster” page 657 Roosevelt did not destroy all trusts.
Good Trust – Companies that are concerned with public welfare. Like Hospitals. Bad Trust – Companies only interested in making money and controlling an industry.

4 Square Deal page 658 Roosevelt ran for President in 1904 using his policy of “a Square Deal” Square Deal Policy = Government regulation of businesses. Make sure that workers were taken care of. Laissez – faire = French Term “Let people do as they choose” Under this policy, businesses became powerful, something Roosevelt was not going to let happen.

Conservation = Protection of natural resources, like lakes, mountains and forests. Roosevelt was worried that America’s growth might destroy the countries natural wonders, as business men might exploit the land for profits.

Read “Labor Crisis” on pages 657 – 658. Explain the steps President Roosevelt took in settling the crisis. Add to your explanation your opinion on how well you think the President handled the situation. Why is it important to conserve our national parks? Can you argue against conserving so much land?
