1 AKA – Input/output tables
Function Tables AKA – Input/output tables

2 Identify the rule for getting from x (input) to the y (output).
Objective: Identify the rule for getting from x (input) to the y (output).

3 Question: How do I identify rules?

4 Answer: Ask yourself “Is my number getting larger or smaller when I move from the x to the y?” Larger – How can I make a number bigger? Smaller – How can I make a number smaller?

5 Larger – Add or multiply Smaller – Subtract or divide
Answer: Larger – Add or multiply Smaller – Subtract or divide

6 What do I do if that does not work?
This means that it isn’t a one step rule Now you need to try two step rules! To get larger - Start by multiplying by 2 and then add or subtract to get to the number. See if that rule work for the next input/output. If not, move to multiplying by 3, 4, 5….

7 What do I do if that does not work?
To get smaller - Start by dividing by 2 (same as multiplying by ½) and then add or subtract to get to the number. See if that rule work for the next input/output. If not, move to dividing by 3, 4, 5….

8 Question 1 X (input) Y (output) 1 4 3 12 5 20 7 ?

9 Question 2 X (input) Y (output) 1 8 4 11 7 ? 10 17

10 Question 3 X (input) Y (output) 26 23 25 22 24 21 ?

11 Question 4 X (input) Y (output) 100 20 85 17 70 14 55 ?

12 Question 5 X (input) Y (output) 8 13 6 9 4 5 2 ?

13 Question 6 X (input) Y (output) 1 4 13 7 22 10 ?

14 Question 7 X (input) Y (output) 2 4 3 6 33 ?

15 Question 8 X (input) Y (output) -1 1 3 7 ?

16 Did you know that you can graph this data?

17 Take 3-4 minutes to discuss with a partner, how you can graph functions.
