Rule: plus (adding) 5 The rule is the operation you are applying to each number and what you are counting by. + 5 + 5 + 5 Go over this term orally with the class. You may want student to make a foldable for key vocabulary terms. The students should be instructed to write the term “RULE” on the outside of the flap, and then on the inside they will write what this term means. The students will also put a representation of the term (like the one on the PowerPoint slide). Each vocabulary term will be set up on the foldable in the same manner.

The Rule is what you are adding or subtraction by Rule: +5 IN OUT 3 Think 3 + 5 8 Go over vocabulary term orally. If working with a foldable, have students record vocabulary term, meaning, and representation in the foldable. Apply the rule to the number written in the “IN” column. 13 8 If there is only a number in the “OUT” column and you need to find the “IN” number, then you must do the opposite of the rule. 13 18 18 Think 23
