What life was like in 1916 ireland

What we already know…. The Easter Rising happened mostly in Dublin city, and lasted from April 24th until April 30th1916. 1,200 men and women from the Irish Volunteers, the Irish Citizen Army and the women’s group, Cumman na mBan made the rising happen. They wanted an irish republic The Rising was planned in secret by 7 men, who formed a “Military Council” after the First World War started. They were, Tom Clarke, Sean McDermott, Patrick Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh, Joseph Plunkett, James Connolly and Eamon Ceannt.

Houses

neighbourhoods This is the Claddagh in Galway in It probably looked the same in 1916

School There were about 8000 primary schools in Ireland in 1916.
All children learned reading, writing, arithmetic and spelling. Irish was only taught in about 300 of these primary schools. Boys learned farming, especially in country schools. Girls learned needlework, cookery and laundry because they had to look after the houses. Here are some pictures of children in school in 1916

How people dressed

transport People used ponies and carts and sometimes donkeys.
The 2nd picture shows a man driving pigs to the market in his pony and trap. There were some cars but they were expensive
