Setup beam intensities for FCC-hh
3
Use of safe beams for machine
SPS and LHC both have a definition of a ‘setup beam’ intensity, considered an intensity that can never harm any of the machine components (e.g. 5E11 at 450GeV ~1E10 at 7TeV) So-called Setup-Beam flags allow for masking of a subset of interlock channels for well defined commissioning and measurement phases, e.g. loss-maps, finding collisions, MDs,… Using these equations implies a prior basic setup of the machine & protection systems (COLL)

Safe beams for FCC Study of whole hadron accelerator complex at CERN (energy range from 50 MeV – 50 TeV) Assuming E_inj=3.3TeV, E_flat_top=50TeV, emittance 2.2um, i.e. ~0.1mm at beta=100m Yuancun Nie, R.Schmidt, et al : ” Interaction of 50 MeV - 50 TeV protons with solid copper and graphite targets in hadron accelerator complex at CERN”

Summary Safe beam at 50TeV in the order of 5E8 (1E10 for 3.3TeV, i.e. comparable to current dynamic range of BPM system) Setup of FCC beams can be done with such smaller intensities at flat top provided systematics (‘pilot’, nominal and train) are less dominant or deterministic
