The Feasts of Israel Louis G. Hulsey September 16, 2012 Rosh Hashanah Casa Grande, Arizona

2 Pentecost (Shavuot= “weeks”)
Leviticus 23:15-16 KJV 15, “And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete:” 16, “Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD.”

3 Pentecost Leviticus 23:17 17, “Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of two tenth deals: they shall be of fine flour; they shall be baken with leaven; they are the firstfruits unto the LORD.

4 Pentecost Leviticus 23:18 18, “And ye shall offer with the bread seven lambs without blemish of the first year, and one young bullock, and two rams: they shall be for a burnt offering unto the LORD, with their meat offering, and their drink offerings, even an offering made by fire, of sweet savour unto the LORD.”

5 Pentecost Leviticus 23:19-20
19, “Then ye shall sacrifice one kid of the goats for a sin offering, and two lambs of the first year for a sacrifice of peace offerings.” 20, “And the priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits for a wave offering before the LORD, with the two lambs: they shall be holy to the LORD for the priest.”

6 Pentecost Leviticus 23:21 21, “And ye shall proclaim on the selfsame day, that it may be an holy convocation unto you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.”

7 “Pentecost,” a Greek Word, Means “Fifty days.”
A. How Pentecost was celebrated: Pentecost is a feast celebrated fifty days after the Feast of Firstfruits. Pentecost is also known as the “Feast of Weeks.” Pentecost commemorates the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai. Pentecost always comes on Sunday, Leviticus 23:16.

8 Pentecost Pentecost is always celebrated with leavened bread, Leviticus 23:17. Pentecost came at the end of the wheat harvest. The offering at Pentecost was 7 lambs, 1 bull, 2 rams, and drink offerings, Lev. 23:18. These offerings were a wave offering, a sin offering, and a peace offering, Lev. 23:19.

9 The Significance of Pentecost
1. The first Pentecost established the Law of Moses on Mount Sinai. a. The Law of Moses was part of God’s Covenant with Israel. b. The Law of Moses came directly from God. c. The Law of Moses established the government of Israel. d. The Law of Moses included blessing and curses, Deuteronomy 28. e. The Law of Moses revealed the nature of God, the nature of man, and the necessity of the sacrifice.

10 New Testament Pentecost
2. On the Day of Pentecost in the New Testament the Holy Spirit was poured out on the believers. The New Testament Pentecost established: A New Covenant Jeremiah 31:33, KJV “But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

11 New Testament Pentecost
Jeremiah 31:34, “And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” 2 Corinthians 3:3, KJV, “Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.”

12 New Testament Pentecost
Hebrews 8:10, KJV, “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:” Hebrews 8:13, KJV, “In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.”

13 New Testament Pentecost
The New Testament Pentecost established: A New Covenant A New Sacrifice A New priesthood A New tabernacle A New law A New people

14 New Testament Pentecost
b. The New Testament Pentecost established and empowered the Church. The Day of Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. Pentecost empowered believers with the authority, faith, and power of Jesus. Pentecost empowered believers to work the works of Christ His way.

15 Pentecost Similarities Between the Day of the Covenant and Pentecost:
The Day of Pentecost was similar to the day the Law was given. The Day of the Covenant came with fire and lightening. Pentecost came with fire and wind.

16 Compare Testaments The Day of the Covenant established the law and authority for the nation of Israel. The Day of Pentecost established the power and authority of the Church. The Old Covenant was written on tablets of stone. The New Covenant was written on the hearts of men.

17 The Feast of Trumpets Rosh HaShanah
Lev 23:24, “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation.” Lev 23:25, “Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.” Lev 23:26, “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,”

18 Day of Atonement Lev 23:27, “Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.”  Lev 23:28, “And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.”

19 Feast of Trumpets Num 10:10, “Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the LORD your God.” Num 29:1 “And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets unto you.”

20 Feast of Trumpets Nehemiah celebrated the Feast of Trumpets after the return from the Babylonian Captivity. Nehemiah 8:1, “And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel.”

21 Feast of Trumpets Nehemiah 8:2, “And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. “ Nehemiah 8:3, “And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.”

22 Feast of Trumpets The Feast of Trumpets marked the beginning of the Days of Awe, known to Jews as the Teshuvim. Leviticus 23:24 says the Feast of Trumpets is a memorial, but the Bible does not say what event it commemorates. Jewish teachers taught that this day celebrated the deliverance of Isaac by the sacrifice of the ram caught in the thicket. This is said to be the reason that trumpets blown on this day were made of rams’ horns. The ram’s head was to be eaten this day in remembrance of the ram of Isaac, and also to remind the Jews that they would be the head and not the tail. [John Gill’s Exposition, Lev. 23:24].

23 The Feast of Trumpets This day was also the first day of repentance in preparation for the Day of Atonement. This day marked the beginning of the civil year. Jewish scholars also taught that Feast of Trumpets celebrated the birthday of the earth. Feast of Trumpets was also Coronation Day in Israel. No matter what day the ruler became king, the coronation took place on Rosh HaShanah.

24 The Feast of Trumpets The Feast of Trumpets refers to the “last trump” of I Corinthians 15. 1Cor 15:51, “Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,” 1Cor 15:52, “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”

25 The Feast of Trumpets 1 Thessalonians 4:16, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:” 1 Thessalonians 4:17, “Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

26 The New Moon The Feast of Trumpets begins at the first sighting of the new moon. No man knows the day nor the hour of the new moon because it appears beside the setting sun for only a few minutes 29.5 days after the previous new moon. So it may be seen on the 29th or 30th day of the month of Elul. This day actually lasted for two days and was counted as one day, the Yom Teruah (Day of the trumpet blast).

27 The New Moon Two credible witnesses had to attest to the high priest that they had seen the new moon, then the trumpets would sound and the new year would begin.

28 The New Moon The new moon and the feasts of the Lord are a shadow of things to come. Colossians 2:16, “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:” Colossians 2:17, “Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. We should pay attention to this since the Feast of Trumpets is the only Feast of the Lord that falls on a new moon.”

29 The Warning The Feast of Trumpets is the warning of the coming Day of Judgment, the coming of the Day of Atonement. God has always had a heart to warn people before He proclaims judgment. God warned the people before the flood, and He warned Nineveh before it was destroyed.

30 Trumpets Are Mercy God does not want anyone to receive the wrath of His judgment. Ezekiel 18:21-23, KJV, “But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22, All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. 23, Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

31 When The Trumpet Calls [In Israel]"At the instant that the Jewish workers heard the trumpet sound, all would immediately stop harvesting, even if they were not finished (think about that!) and go to the Temple for worship! In those days, as it is sometimes today, a Jew & an Arab might be working side by side in the fields - but when the trumpet sounded on this particular day, the Jew would stop and go to worship, while the Arab kept on harvesting. Jesus used this same analogy in Matthew. 24:36-44 of the Second Coming."

32 The Resurrection The Feast of Trumpets foreshadows the awakening of the dead. Rosh Hashanah is also referred to as 'Yom Teruah', the Day of the Sounding of the Shofar, or the Day of the Awakening Blast.  On Yom Teruah, the Day of the Sounding of the Shofar, it is imperative for every person to hear the shofar.

33 The Trumpet Blast Teruah means "an awakening blast".  A theme associated with Rosh Hashanah is the theme "to awake".  Teruah is also translated as "shout". Isaiah 12:6 puts the shouting in the context of the thousand-year reign of Jesus. Isaiah 12:6, KJV, “Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.”

34 The Shout of the Messiah
Isaiah 44:23, LITV, “Sing, O heavens, for Jehovah has done it. Shout, O lower parts of the earth; burst forth into praise, O mountains. O forest and every tree in it, sing praise, because Jehovah has redeemed Jacob, and He glorifies Himself in Israel.” Zephaniah 3:14-15, LITV, “Shout for joy, daughter of Zion; shout, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all the heart, daughter of Jerusalem! 15, Jehovah has turned off your judgments; He has turned away your enemy. Jehovah, the King of Israel, is in your midst; you shall not fear evil any more.”

35 The Shout of the Messiah
The first coming of Christ is associated with a shout in Zechariah 9:9, KJV, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

36 The Shout and The Trump The ultimate shout is the sound of the rapture in First Thessalonians 4:16-17. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, KJV, 16, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17, Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

37 Arise From the Dead Whether it is by the blast of a shofar or the force of a supernatural shout, God's goal is to awaken us.  "...Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light." -Ephesians 5:14.

38 Open the Gates The gates of Heaven are opened on Rosh HaShanah so the righteous nation may enter (Isaiah 26:2, Psalm 118:19-20). Isaiah 26:2, KJV, “Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.”
