1 Allergic contact dermatitis (shoes) The allergic contact dermatitis Fig was caused by a sandal. Note how the eruption conforms, like a patch test, to the design of the thongs. Shoe dermatitis should be considered in any eczematous eruption on the dorsum of the foot in a child. The agent responsible for the rash in this photograph was a tanning agent or dye. The other common causes of shoe dermatitis are rubber and rubber accelerators, adhesives, and leather. If the allergen is correctly identified by patch testing, it is possible to select the footwear that is tolerable.
