2 Propaganda Definition: The spreading of ideas or beliefs to further a particular cause or damage an opposing cause Advertising is used to get the consumer to buy a product or use a service Propaganda is used to attempt to “brainwash” people to think, act or feel a certain way. BOTH use the same tools – slogans, humor, emotional images to make their work effective

4 Common Objectives 1. Recruitment of soldiers - through a draft - voluntary enlistment 2. Financing the war effort through the sale of war bonds - loans from citizens to the government - new taxes

5 3. Eliminating dissent and unifying the country behind the war effort 4. Conservation of resources - items necessary to wage war - food, oil, steel 5. Participation in home-front organizations to support the war effort

6 Common Tools

7 Demonization - portray the enemy as evil, murderous, and aggressive - Shows public who they should hate - more powerful when the enemy can be blamed for committing atrocities against women, children, or other non-combatants

8 Emotional Appeal - plays on people’s emotions to promote the war - most common emotion is fear: the more frightened someone is the more likely they are to take action - propagandists explain in detail the action they want the consumer to carry out

9 Name Calling Use of loaded words to encourage hatred of the enemy
Commies, Japs, Huns Reinforces negative stereotypes Helps in demonizing the enemy

10 Patriotic Appeals Use of patriotic language or symbols to appeal to people’s national pride “We are Americans”

11 Half-Truths or Lies Use of deception or twisting the truth
May include SOME element of truth to make an argument more persuasive Ex. Blaming the enemy for complete responsibility of the war Portraying own country as the victim of aggression

12 Catchy Slogans Using memorable phrases to foster support for the war
“Remember the Maine!” “Remember the Alamo” “We will never forget” Motivates people to support the use of arms

13 Evocative Visual Symbols
Use of symbols that appeal to people’s emotions to promote the war The flag, statues, mothers and children, enemy uniforms

14 Humor or Caricatures Capturing the viewer’s attention through the use of humor to promote the war The enemy is usually the butt of the jokes used in the propaganda
