How do we write chemical equations?
All pupils will be able to (Baseline): Name compounds given formulae or symbol equations. Most pupils will be able to (Further): Write word, formulae and balance chemical equations for reactions, using the symbols of the first 20 elements in the periodic table and the elements in Groups 1 and 7. What is a chemical reaction?

Law of conservation of mass
The total mass of a product formed in a reaction is equal to the total mass of the reactants. No new atoms are ever created or destroyed

Writing balanced symbol equations
Natural gas is used in our homes to provide heat for cooking. Methane (CH4(g)) is the main chemical in natural gas and will react with oxygen (O2(g)) to make carbon dioxide (CO2(g)) and water (H2O(l)). Write a balanced symbol equation for this reaction. Which of these are the reactants and which are the products? CH4(g) + O2(g) CO2(g) + H2O(l)
