Question #6 How do we keep track of history? 2016 C.E. Humans started keeping track of time in Year 1. This is when the Common Era (C.E.) began A.D. stand for Anno Domini which means “the First Year”. A.D. and C.E. are the same thing! For this class we will use C.E. Years before Year 1 are referred to as B.C.E. which means Before the Common Era

6 Question #7 Think of B.C.E. years as negative numbers. The further you get from Year 1, you go further back in time C.E. years start at Year 1 and go all the way up until present day (Year 2015) 2016 C.E. 2016 C.E.

7 B.C.E lasted a very long time!
Scientists believe the earth is around 4.5 billion years old! We have been keeping track of time for only 2,015 years! If a timeline showed Earth’s history, the Common Era would be a tiny speck on the end of your timeline Beginning of Time 2016 C.E. 1 C.E.

8 Add these events on your timeline…
10,000 B.C.E- The Neolithic Revolution comes to an end 3100 B.C.E- Civilization emerges in Mesopotamia 2600 B.C.E- The first pyramids in Egypt are built 500 B.C.E- Democracy is established in Greece 220 B.C.E- The Qin Dynasty builds the Great Wall of China Tip: Not all events should be evenly space out on your timeline! If events happened close to each other, they should be closer together on your timeline!

9 Add these events to your timeline…
70 C.E.- The Colosseum is built in Ancient Rome 1215 C.E.- The Magna Carta is signed 1492 C.E.- Columbus lands in the Bahamas 1776 C.E.- The United States declares independence from Great Britain 1945 C.E.- World War II ends

On your worksheet, create a timeline of the 7 most important events of your life. Ideas: When you were born First day of school Moved New brother/sister This will be graded!
