2 Skills Skill - the ability to do something well;
Skills can come from one’s knowledge, practice, or aptitude Example – Carpentry was one of his many skills. The dancers performed with skill. He still had the skill to make people laugh. Skills

3 Two Major Categories of Skills
Personal skills Things we are good at - our strengths, abilities, and attributes. Transferable skills Skills you may learn at one job that you may be able to use at your next job. Skills

4 Personal Skills 3 Types of Personal Skills
Mental skills – These are job skills using your mind. A pilot would primarily use his mental skills. Physical – These are job skills using your physical abilities. An athlete would primarily use her physical abilities. Social – These are job skills using your people skills. A sales person would primarily use her people skills to sell things. Skills

5 Transferrable Skills 8 Types of Transferrable Skills
Communication skills – Communication skills include speaking and writing. Listening skills – Listening skills include sending and receiving messages. Problem-solving skills - Problem-solving skills include handling conflicts. Technology skills – Technology skills include computer knowledge, tech things.

6 Transferrable Skills Continued
Decision-making skills – Decision-making skills include making wise decisions. Organizing and planning skills - Organizing and planning skills include time management. This is similar to the data category discussed in a previous section. Teamwork skills - Teamwork skills include working with team members. This is similar to the people category discussed in a previous section. Adaptability skills – Adaptability skills include adjusting to change.

7 Transferrable Skills Continued
Example: Some skills are transferable and others are not transferable. If I am a dental hygienist who cleans teeth, my skill of using tools to clean teeth will not transfer to many other jobs. a dental hygienist must have good communication and listening skills when working with patients. These two skills – communication and listening – would be transferable skills to many, many other jobs.
