1 Warm up: What is your skeleton made up of? What does your skeleton do?
Do all living things have a skeleton?

2 Skeletal System Objective: Explain the primary functions of the skeletal system and the major organs within this system

3 206 bones in all!! 22 bones in skull 6 in middle ears 1 hyoid bone
26 in vertebral column 25 in thoracic cage 4 in pectoral girdle 60 in upper limbs 60 in lower limbs 2 in pelvic girdle 206 bones in all!!

4 Skeletal System Information
Appendicular System bones of limbs and bones that anchor them to the axial skeleton 126 bones Axial System - supports and protects organs of head, neck and trunk 80 bones

5 Functions of bone (skeleton)
1. Support and protection 2. Blood cell formation 3. Mineral storage (calcium especially) 4. Site for muscle attachment  body movement

6 Types of Joints Fixed joints – don’t move
Hinge joints – only move in one direction Ball-n-socket joints – can move in many directions Gliding joints – only allow gliding movement

7 Types Of Joints Pivot Hinge Ball & Socket Gliding Top of the neck
Elbow/Knee Ball & Socket Gliding Intercarpal joints Shoulder/Hip

8 Cranium Mandible Clavicle Sternum Scapula Humerus Rib Vertebral Column Ulna Pelvis Radius Sacrum Carpals Coccyx Metacarpals Phalanges Femur Patella Tibia Fibula Tarsals Metatarsals Phalanges

9 Radius (side by thumb) Ulna (by pinky)

10

11 Fibula (small and thin) Tibia (bigger bone)
Fib rhymes with thin? Tibia (bigger bone) Big Toe = Tibia (t and t)

12

13

14

15 bones which do not fall into any other category
Types of Bones Long Bone Short Bone Head – Body - Head As wide as they are long Flat Bone Irregular Bone Provides Protection bones which do not fall into any other category

16 Connective Tissues 1. Cartilage – 2. Ligament – 3. Tendon –
Allows joints to move easily, cushions bones, and supports soft tissue 2. Ligament – Hold bones in place at the joints 3. Tendon – Joins muscle to muscle or muscle to bone

17 Conditions of the Skeletal System
Osteoporosis Bones become fragile and more likely to break Osteoarthritis Joint disorder where the cartilage is wearing away
