Important Information
This week our class will discuss the Earth’s natural resources and why they are valuable. We will also take a look at the Earth’s cycles. Comprehension: Theme You and your child recall a TV show, movie, video game, and book and decide what the theme of each one was. Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing. Words to Know: simile and metaphor You and your child work together to build sentences using the vocabulary words. You will start with one word in one sentence, then two words in one sentence, and so on until you have included all four words in one sentence. • Spelling/Phonics: words ending with -ance and -ence You will say a word, and your child will tell you whether the word ends in -ance or -ence and then spell the whole word. Then your child will make a chart of the words according to their endings.. Important Information Students should read at least 1 chapter book at all times as part of our AR program. My homeroom will be participating in a Reading Buddies Program with Mrs. Bradley’s 1st grade class on Fridays from 1:15-1:40. Students will read aloud an age-appropriate book with their reading buddy and then assist in helping the 1st grader take an AR test. In addition, my students will be able to take an AR test on the book they read for additional AR points. Encourage your student to check out a book for their reading buddy on Thursdays during our regular Library time. Have your student read aloud the book Thursday evening to you to prepare for their Reading Buddy time on Friday. You may consider asking a few comprehension questions as well. AR Students should be regularly reading AR books and taking AR comprehension tests in order to meet their weekly AR percentage goals. AR is part of ELA and students earn weekly AR grades based on their weekly goals. Students should always have a longer chapter book that they are reading. This weeks scholastic book fair is a great opportunity to get your student excited about reading. Come check out all the new books available at our Family Book Fair Night on Tuesday, February 9th from 4:30-8:00.
