Introduction Breastfeeding has proven, natural benefits to mother and child Exclusively breastfed child 14 times less likely to die in the first 6 months than a non-breastfed child Prevalence of breastfeeding is low globally (Lancet, 2016) 37% of children < 6 months in LMIC exclusively breastfed 58% of children between months in LMIC still breastfed Scaling up breastfeeding universally can prevent over 800,000 deaths among children < 5 years (Lancet, 2016)
5
BBF Project Vision Create an evidence-based measurement and toolbox to help guide development and tracking of large-scale, well-coordinated, multi-sector, national breastfeeding promotion programmes BBF will not only assess and measure, but also support countries to scale- up breastfeeding programmes through step-by-step evidence-based criteria
6
BBF Project Vision Empower countries to assess their current readiness for scale-up Identify key areas for improvement Act upon them using an evidence-based approach Monitor progress of scaling-up breastfeeding protection, promotion and support programmes

BBF Framework: Breastfeeding Gear Model
The Breastfeeding Gear Model (BFGM)a: robust framework serves as foundation for BBF BFGM: eight ‘gears’ at work and in harmony for large-scale improvement in a country’s national breastfeeding program Evidence-based ‘Becoming Breastfeeding Friendly Index’ (BBFI) consists of these eight gears a Pérez-Escamilla et al. Adv Nutr 2012
