NREN Its Existence and Mission Predrag Pale
2
Yesterday the world without networks academic community as
no technology no service academic community as inventor (of technology) experimentator (with applications)
3
Today commercial networks available
networking services are a commodity (usually) significant gap between AC and other communities primary and secondary education (public) libraries cultural institutions
4
Tomorrow ?
5
MNREN = ƒ ( RAC ) The Mission MNREN – the mission
RAC – the role of academic community
6
The Role of Academic Community
is the Academic Community autistic ? science because of science self-sufficient “outside” of society and its needs and problems or the leader in development (of society) ? (deeply) engaged in needs and problems of the society proactive a paradigm and a test-bed for future changes in society in service of science or in service of society
7
The Role of IT in AC is Information Technology (in AC)
a support system ? for traditional activities an infrastructure ? essential for new way of academic work and life a tool ? to achieve main goals
8
The Role of a NREN is a NREN a support organization ? a coordinator ?
acts on request (from members of AC) a coordinator ? acts jointly (with members of AC) a leader ? acts as an initiator of programs, projects acts as an awareness agent in academic community in the society as a whole
9
The Domain of a NREN academic community only ?
the whole educational community ? the whole non-profit area ? public libraries NGOs the whole public services ? government services judicial system semi-commercial services ? public health system
10
The Role & Activities of a NREN
Influencing (strategies, interns, infiltration) Leading (consulting, supervision, project management) Promotion (events, media, marketing) Experience (pilot projects, co-operation) Education (literature, courses) Information Infrastructure (systems, databases, flow) Computer Infrastructure (servers, classrooms) Communication Infrastructure (access, network)
11
Why To Extend The Domain
other domains do have an (urgent ?) need do not have organization like NREN could public interest be trusted to for-profit organizations ? NREN does have accumulated knowledge and experience a network of partners and suppliers an active user base (academic community) both are financed from the (same) budget
12

14
Communication Infrastructure
connectivity as a commodity high-tech experimental test-bed
15
Computer Infrastructure
common servers common and general purpose classrooms
16
Information Infrastructure
information systems (scientific) databases (user) support implementation assistance
17
Education tutorials for new technologies courses for new tools
customized literature knowledge verification
18
Experience to create, gather, store and disseminate experience
ICT application research & development pilot projects cooperation knowledge management
19
Promotion awareness building communication enhancing events media
marketing
20
Leading large scale projects consulting supervision project management
