Texting Kills Nurses serving Montcalm County
Videos may contain Graphic Material Nurses serving Montcalm County Venus Johnston RN, Lindy Hilding RN, Tammie McDaniel RN, and Connie Chrisman RN This is our title page with music from Lupe Fiasco to catch the audiences attention. Our audience are the students of Greenville High School. The population of Greenville High School is 1277 and the population of Greenville is % of Greenville residents are Caucasian. 1/3 of the businesses in Greenville are manufacturing businesses and the mean income is around $30,000 per year(City Data, 2012).

It can wait…..turn it off! This video is to catch the attention of the students and to show them what could happen as a result of texting and driving (nick , 2009).

What is distracted driving?
Distracted Driving is the diversion of attention away from activities critical for safe driving. Distracted driving causes a person to have impairments in 3 critical areas Longer reaction time – braking & traffic signals Impaired ability to keep in the same lane Shorter following time According to the World Health Organization (2012) distraction driving affects all age groups but is particularly striking among those aged years old. All of these types of distractions are also known as Cognitive Distractions and are even more dangerous with increasing applications such as and internet access via smart phones.
4
Facts Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of DEATHS for teenagers Texting while driving is a distraction 83% of all teens own a cell phone but only 70% own a book Texting in Greenville instead of Grand Rapids does not make it safer Here we are trying to educate the students without boggling their minds with statistics they won’t remember. This is our attempt to meet the goal objective in Healthy People 2020 of “Improve the healthy development, health, safety, and well-being of adolescents and young adults” (United States Department of Health and Human Services, 2012).
5
It’s against the law First fine $100.00 Caught again $200.00
A youth in Massachusetts caught texting and driving involved in a fatal accident was charged with VEHICULAR HOMICIDE Another attempt to persuade the youth by telling them it is against the law (Michigan State Police, 2012)
6
The Law Michigan is the 24th state to ban drivers from texting.
The primary enforcement law prohibits drivers from: Reading a text Manually typing a text Sending a text More about the law from the Michigan State Police.

‘Thumbs on the Wheel’ Campaign
The Michigan State police formulated this campaign Their focus To have drivers recognize the potential hazards when they are not fully focused on the road To remind drivers to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel To explain the 3 types of distractions while driving The Office of Highway Safety Planning is launching this program to encourage awareness & compliance (Michigan State Police, 2010)

3 Types of Distraction Visual-taking your eyes off the road
Manual-taking your hands off the wheel Cognitive-taking your mind off what you are doing This slide explains the 3 types of distractions outlined in the “Thumbs on the Wheels Campaign” (Michigan State Police, 2010).
9
It could happen to you In 2009, the state recorded 947 people were using cell phones at the time of a crash. That would be similar to 3 out of 4 kids sitting next to you. If you think it wont happen to you YOU’RE WRONG According to Piaget, adolescence children are in the formal operations stage of cognitive development. They have what is called an illusion of invulnerability. This refers to the concept that bad things only happen to others (Kail, 2010).
10
Things to think about What if a doctor took your appendix out while texting on his phone Texting while driving is just as dangerous as drinking and driving Your brain does not have the ability to concentrate on driving and texting at the same time According to Amy Ship M.D. (2010), Talking to patients about distractions while driving should be part of our primary assessments.
11
How to stop doing it Turn off your phone when getting into a vehicle
Ask your friends to do the same DriveMode-a mobile app for your phone from AT&T Take the pledge to not text and drive According to Johnson (2012) there are ways to deter texting and driving. AT&T has developed a mobile application that when enabled and the vehicle is moving 25 mph, the app automatically sends a customizable auto reply message to incoming texts, letting friends know you’re behind the wheel and will reply when it is safe (AT&T, 2012).
12
Why stop doing it To stay alive It’s considered “Compulsive behavior”
To make it to graduation Because many people care about you According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) (2012) teenage cell phone use has developed into “Compulsive Cell Phone Use.” In an article called “Driven to Distraction” the AAP reports that teens anticipating calls or messages may distract drivers therefore increasing the risks of a car crash. This was based on an online anonymous survey of 384 teens (AAP, 2012).
13
No Phone Zone Hand Held Cell Devices Hands Free Devices
Audio & Visual Signals “The available research indicates that cell phone use while driving, whether it is a hands-free or hand-held device, degrades a driver’s performance. The driver is more likely to miss key visual and audio cues needed to avoid a crash. Hand-held devices may be slightly worse, but hands-free devices are not risk-free.” (CDC, 2012). Hand held devices leave you cognitively distracted and they alter your sense of hearing (2012).

The Tragedy Catherine Stevens 18 years old on her way to graduation John Breen and his daughter Megan Husband Father GRADUATION TO BE OR NOT TO BE Final thoughts on the consequences of texting and driving. Bring home the cost of texting and driving by placing the victims of the I’M ON MY WAY demonstration in this scenario.
15
Conclusion TAKE THE PLEDGE
A final visual reminder as to what texting and driving will cost the distracted driver. The purpose of this slide is to leave a lasting impression on the audience as they leave the auditorium. The goal is to get them to take the pledge and potentially avoid another senseless tragedy.
