Irrigation technique: earthen walls around fields traps flood waters = Surplus

3 Powerful People Powerful People and families gain control and collect some of the surplus as a tax. Use this surplus to buy cloth, jewelry & luxury goods.

4 Job Specialization The surplus means some people are able to be artisans & merchants. (Makers & sellers of those goods) Artisans & merchants settle around the homes of the local rulers who buy their goods.

5 Cities This settlement led to cities. Centers of culture and power.
Buildings built by architects and decorated by artisans.
