1. God’s word warns me of impending judgment. Jeremiah 6:1-20

God speaks judgement upon his people because of their wickedness and sin.

God speaks a warning to his people to give them a chance to repent and avoid disaster.

Jeremiah complains that no one will listen to him. God tells him to speak anyway. 6:10-12

Judah would not obey God’s word or keep their part of the covenant relationship. They would not repent when they were warned. They would be disciplined through God’s judgment.

If people do not deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Jesus, they will be destroyed in the judgment to come.

2. God’s word will judge people both now and in eternity. John 12:47-50

God’s word leads to salvation for those who receive and obey it, and leads to judgment for those who reject and disobey it.

“Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” John 3:18

While Jesus came to save us, he will not force people to believe and obey him. Rejecting him has consequences now and forever.

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.” John 3:36

Judgment and salvation both begin now and last forever.
