The story of the origin of mass - Higgs boson discovery -
Dr. Adrian Buzatu, University of Glasgow, Created in the Big Bang, the world later evolved. Life needs long-term-stable atoms. Atoms are made of just three elementary particles. Electron Quark up Quark down atom proton neutron Energy Elementary particles Atoms Big Bang Evolution Atoms Molecules Biological cells (life) Combine Interact As base to the pyramid of sciences, elementary particle physics explains how atoms are created. Without mass, electrons would fly at the speed of light (c) and atoms wouldn’t be able to exist. Psychology consciousness Biology cells Chemistry molecules Physics atoms Physics nuclei Physics subatomic particles Physics elementary particles me = 0 kg ve = c me > 0 kg ve < c In 1964 a mathematical model (theory) was proposed to explain the origin of mass. Absolutely everywhere there is a Higgs field that slows particles down, giving them mass. Collisions Friction Reduced speed Mass Forest = Brout-Englert-Higgs field Trees = Higgs elementary particles (Higgs bosons) Persons = elementary particles acquiring mass Prediction: the existence of the Higgs boson. Experiment is the supreme judge of a theory. In 2012 two CERN experiments observed independently the Higgs boson, thus confirming the theory. The theorists were able to receive a Nobel prize in 2013. Daughter particles Higgs particle Energy of protons m/s missing from 300,000,000 m/s (speed of light) In 2015 Run II data collection started at CERN. The properties of the Higgs boson, which are being measured more precisely, may hint that the current theory is in fact a particular case of a larger theory?
