2 Scaffolding Lessons to Meet Students’ Needs Session 6a Elementary

3 Learning Targets I can analyze possible solutions to challenges in implementing the demands of the ELA Common Core Learning Standards. I can design effective scaffolds that allow students to have access to the rigor of the standards.

4 Struggle for Smarts Use Post-its or note paper to hold the key ideas about “productive struggle.” Alix Spiegel. (2012, November 12) Struggle for Smarts? How Eastern and Western Cultures Tackle Learning [Audio podcast]. Retrieved from

5 Back-to-Back; Face-to-Face
What does productive struggle look like for you as a professional? How does this impact your view of implementation of the Common Core Standards with learners who may struggle? How does differentiation allow all students to have access to productive struggle?

6 Scaffold A temporary support that helps students achieve a learning goal.

7 Chalk Talk Form a group of no more than 4 people.
With a marker, stand in front of one of the charts. Brainstorm solutions to the listed challenge and write on the chart – taking ONLY the top 1/4 of the paper. After 2 minutes, you will go to another poster, read what has written before you, and add additional ideas…again, taking up only ¼ of the total paper. You will visit at least 4 different posters.

8 Scaffolding Options Read Scaffolding Options for ELA and text code for: C = Currently using N = New ideas

10 Grade 3 Case Study Locate the Case Study in your Participant’s Notebook. As you read, highlight parts of the narrative that indicate scaffolds that the teachers have implemented. When finished, share identified scaffolds with a shoulder partner.

11 Designing Scaffolds Choice:
Use the provided lesson plan in your notebooks, Grade 3, Module 2a, Unit 1, Lesson 3. Or a lesson plan of your choice using or

12 Designing Scaffolds, Continued
Think back to the student profiles you created. As you read this, identify points in the plan where your students may need additional support. Using the support document and your learning from the last several days, plan for additional scaffolding. Be prepared to share with colleagues.

13 Revising Revisit each Chalk Talk poster.
Using a marker, make any revisions, additions or deletions you think are needed based on the learning from this session.

14 Learning Target Check-In
I can analyze possible solutions to challenges in implementing the demands of the ELA Common Core Learning Standards. I can design effective scaffolds that allow students to have access to the rigor of the standards.

15 Agree or Disagree A scaffold is a temporary support.
Learning Standards should be modified to meet learner’s needs. A scaffold is a necessary support used to help students accomplish a task that is otherwise not possible. At times, it may be appropriate to limit the amount of text a student reads. If students are unable to read complex text, replace with less complex text.

16 Reflecting on the 4 Ts Framework
Based on what you experienced in this session, record new understandings about any of the Ts on your 4 Ts Anchor Note-catcher.
