QUIZ What is the atmosphere? We live in what layer of the atmosphere?
What are the 2 components of the atmosphere? What percentage of the atmosphere is Carbon Dioxide? What percentage of the atmosphere is Oxygen? Name a natural source of the atmosphere.

4
What is the Function of the Atmosphere?
Acts as a filter; absorbs and reflects solar energy Transfers Thermal Energy
5
Solar Energy = Visible light, infrared and UV waves
FILTERS Incoming & Outgoing Solar Energy = Visible light, infrared and UV waves Reflects = Bounces off Absorbs = Soaked up
7
Transfer of Thermal Energy
What is Thermal Energy? The total energy of the particles in an object due to their random motion (vibration). What is Heat? Transfer of thermal energy from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature
8
***Remember*** Thermal energy can be measured Heat is what we feel.
9
Thermal energy can be transferred in three ways
Radiation = transfer of Thermal Energy by electromagnetic waves. Transfer directly from the Sun to Earth’s surface. Electromagnetic waves are both Visible and Infrared waves Examples: Sunburn & Heat Lamps
10
2. Conduction = transfer of thermal energy through an object from a higher to a lower temperature.
Transfer between the Earth’s surface and Troposphere. Example: a spoon in a cup of hot soup becomes warm because the heat from the soup is conducted along the spoon.
11
3. Convection = transfer of thermal energy by the movement of the heated material.
Occurs between liquids & gases, main mechanism for energy transfer in the atmosphere Example: water current inside a boiling pot
12
Quick Tip.. Radiation Heat transfer from a light source. Conduction
Heat transfer through a solid . Convection Heat transfer through a liquid or gas.
