What’s the purpose for our reading?
You just read two passages that involved bullies. How are the experiences of Sarah in the story, “Magic in the Classroom” and the Wolf in the poem, “Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf” similar, and how are they different? Identify the key theme in both passages and discuss how the theme was developed through the main character. Be sure to use evidence from both texts to support your response. Just refocus their reading for a purpose and let them tackle the second passage today.

Summarizing Poetry Teacher slide-You will walk kids through summarizing the first stanza-then they can go on their own.

Kids should add their summary to the other side

Ask kids to read the first stanza and then gather their attention back

Note that it is in third-person-so we are getting an ‘outside view’ Then let them know we will summarize each stanza using the Who? Did What? Why? Strategy. Who? The wolf, What? Was hungry-he ate Grandmamma and wanted more? Why? She wasn’t enough to fill him up.

Have kids read and summarize their thinking

Review with the kids and chart summaries on anchor chart
Review with the kids and chart summaries on anchor chart. Ask kids right here what they think the theme is. Could it be the same as yesterday? Why or Why not? Have kids add theme to bottom of their summary like yesterday.

Walk kids through how to go back and replace the word to see what makes the most sense. Answers are B and D-she wasn’t adequate and he needed more to fill him up.

This is a great turn and talk for kids and it supports our reason for reading! Have kids discuss and then you reflect and fill in WITH their help.
