Lived in small groups ppl
Probably began living in Africa
Migrated into Europe & Asia
1st species to walk completely upright
Able to live in much wider range of environments adapt local conditions
1st homo erectus lived in Africa a mill. yrs ago
Roamed over a wider area

3. What they looked like Tall & heavy as modern humans
Taller than previous hominids
Larger brain than homo habilis brain
Teeth smaller than homo habilis teeth
Larger teeth than modern humans teeth
Skull was very thick, sloping forehead, large eyebrow ridge
Massive jaw, flat face, no chin
Large jaw & teeth
Strong muscles to keep head upright
Muscles attached to bony the back of head

4. Homo erectus brain Homo erectus have large brains
Homo erectus brain size cubic inches (88occ-1100cc)

5. Tools Possessed advance hunting techniques
Made more sophisticated hand axes that could cut better
Hand axes are used 4 cutting & digging
Harden wooden spears

6. Food Hunted migrating animals Forged for plants
Hunted elephants, rhinos, deer and wild boar
Men spear salmon in river
Woman gathered wild wheat, almonds,figs,berries,eggs,dandelion leaves
Also shellfish,oysters,turtles anddriftwood for fires

Probably grunted sounds and combined simple words w/gestures in order2 communicate

Used in hunting by catching frightened animals
Learned to cook w/fire
Natural fires made meat easier 2 cut, chew, than when raw
Used fire 4 light & warmth
Kept wild animals away

9. How they made fire Using stones struck together 2 form a spark
rubbing sticks together 2 create heat
Before they didn’t know how 2 make fire on their own
Would catch branches on fire in natural ways like lightning

10. Homo erectus camp: Terra Amata
This site was named “Terra Amata” after the street in Nice where found
Nice is in France
Rich in resources
Located along shore Mediterranean sea
Near fresh water spring
Good place 2 hunt & gather food
Came 2 rebuild their huts year after year
People visited the site 4 only a few days & weeks at a time
