Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust Awarding life changing Scholarships that unlock individual potential and broaden horizons through study and travel overseas, with a view to developing farming and agricultural industries.

3 What is my background?

4 My motivation for the study
Fewer employees in UK agriculture receive training over the last 12 months than in any other industry / sector “Training is a waste of time” “Farming is common sense, you can’t teach that” My background – Family farm - arable -plenty of spare time, taught in local college, run NVQ, IV, EV for awarding bodies - “I’m only doing the course to get a ticket for the compliance scheme” source: UKCES July 2014

7 3 key messages Vision – Good businesses have a clear vision and inspire their staff Training is an investment not a cost UK Agricultural Industry needs a professional career and CPD structure.

8 The Vision Thing – Do we really live it?
Senior vice president of Walgreens overseeing logistic chain growing from 1500 to 8000 stores In the two most modern distribution centres between % of the workforce is made up of people with disabilities It’s not about me, it’s about us Behaviours - how and why you do it Randy lewis Relentless concentration on vision Doing good Results 50% retention rates and 50% fewer sick days Behaviours -

9 Training is an investment not a cost
Compared to a national average of 4.2 days per year, agricultural employers provide 2.5 days of training per employee per year

10 if you don’t train them, they might stay !
If you train staff they might leave - if you don’t train them, they might stay !

13 Professional Career Structure and CPD
Training needs to move away from compliance with regulations and avoidance of penalties, to developing capacity and resilience skills CPD is not giving someone a certificate – it is growing them as a person

14 Professional Career Structure and CPD
A minimum skill level to produce food - a certificate to farm – needs to be set New entrants to farming may well be put off by the lack of professional recognition of the agricultural industry. We need to pay – “does subsidy limit the development of human capital?”

15 What do I now do differently?
Confidence – to go and find out Confidence – to talk to others Confidence – to take a break
