British decedents who shared the values of those back in Britain Named for Queen Victoria Shared values, styles, activities, prejudices Did not want a multicultural society!

Social Class determined a person’s quality of life Social class and standing determined by the male’s status and wealth

Lived in big, fancy homes Had servants Life was easy The rich get richer Immigrants- Scottish and Irish 1-2 bedroom homes Worked long hours 6 days a week Not paid well No vacations No employment insurance No health care

Victorian Attitudes and Values
Stressed hard work and personal success Valued wealth Supported sexual repression, low tolerance of crime, and a strong social ethic. Proud of the British Empire

Materialistic Valuing material possessions, status, appearance, and money above all else spent money on fashion and homes Like the Kardashians but much more modest!

Scientists and inventors made several breakthroughs people excited but also scared Some ideas were so new that people could not understand them

Nobody knew anything about Bacteria Scientists who studied bacteria under a microscope thought it was insect eggs Many people died after surgery due to infection
