Ovarian torsion is caused by spontaneous twist of ovary and fallopian tube. Torsion of normal adnexal structures is more common in pediatric patients than in adults. Mean age is 10 to 11 years, primarily in premenarchal girls. Risk factors include preexisting ovarian masses, rapid uterine expansion such as first trimester, or immediately postpartum.
