1 The big 6! Nutrients that is…

2 Definitions Nutrition Nutrients
Process in which the body takes in and uses food Nutrients Substances in food your body needs to function properly for growth, repair, and energy Definitions

3 6 Major Nutrients Carbohydrates Fats Proteins Vitamins Minerals Water
Simple Complex Fats Saturated Unsaturated Proteins Complete Incomplete Vitamins Water-soluble Fat-soluble Minerals Water 6 Major Nutrients

4 In your groups you will…
Be assigned a nutrient Look up that nutrient on your phone. Create a poster about your nutrient that includes Definitions Sub-categories Recommended amount per day Food sources it can be found in (minimum of 5) also draw a picture of the foods you choose or any other pictures that represent your nutrient. Any other information you find interesting or useful. Use the markers, crayons, and colored pencils from the front to personalize your poster and add color and pictures. Make it look nice for when you present it to the class, you will teach your peers about your nutrient. In your groups you will…

5 Carbohydrates!

6 Starches and sugars found in food
Provide heat, energy, and fiber for digestion 55%-65% of your diet grams/day 4 calories = 1 gram 2 Types Simple: only one sugar (glucose)(milk, fruits, veggies) Complex: 3 or more simple sugars/starches (rice, grains, seeds, nuts)(low in fat)(high in fiber, minerals, and protein)

7 Fats!

8 Most concentrated form of energy (more than carbs and protein)
Provides warmth and temperature regulation, transportation of vitamins, protects organs Most concentrated form of energy (more than carbs and protein) Carries vitamins A, D, E, and K Does not dissolve in water 9 calories = 1 gram grams/day 2 types Saturated: solid or semi solid at room temperature (unhealthy) (animal fats, tropical oils, beef, pork, dairy) Unsaturated: liquid at room temperature (healthy) (vegetable oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, coconut oil) Trans Fat: when a hydrogen is added through a heating process (unhealthy) (margarine, shortening, baked goods)

9 Minerals!

10 Inorganic substances that the body cannot produce.
Regulates many vital body processes. Absorbed from the ground through food Happens when we eat plants and animals 14 are needed on a daily basis Each mineral has a different required amount/day in “mg” Sodium = 500mg Iron = 15mg Calcium = 1200mg

11 Vitamins!

12 Compounds that help regulate and maintain vital body processes
All are needed in small amounts Vitamins do NOT supply calories 13 essential vitamins Vitamin D is produced by the body 2 types: Water-soluble: dissolves in water Gets into bloodstream faster Excess are excreted through urine Replenished regularly Fat-soluble: absorbed and transported by fat A,D,E, and K All are stored in body fat, liver, and kidneys Excess can be toxic

13 Protein!

14 Builds and repairs body tissue (muscle, bone, teeth, skin)
20 different amino acids Body makes all of them except for 9 9 are the essential amino acids that come from food 4 calories/gram grams/day Complete Proteins: foods that contain essential amino acids Fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, soybeans Incomplete Proteins: foods that are missing essential amino acids Seeds, nuts, and grains

15 Water!

16 Carries nutrients to and from cells in the body and regulates body functions
Cushions areas of your body (joints, spinal cord, brain) Hydrates Temperature regulation 7-11 cups daily Makes up 70-80% of our bodies Fruits and veggies have more water than meats and cheeses
