more sustainable Textile Value Chain Lena Julle – IKEA Textile Category Area Manager Hello My name is Lena and I am the Category Area Manager Textiles for IKEA. In short what that means is that I am globally responsible for our textile supply chain, both operationally and strategically. I am extremely please to be here today to talk to you about how IKEA looks upon material and technology innovations to be be a key enabler for a successful and sustainable growth for the future. I will start by showing you a brief video looking broadly on how IKEA views our future and then hone in my presentation a little more in detail on the work we are doing in textiles. Sobring out the popcorn for the short film

We are a manufacturing oriented retailer.

5 IKEA Growth 2020 We are on a growth journey
IKEA and IKEA Textiles is growing in existing stores, in existing markets where we are building new stores as well is in new markets where we have not been before such as India where we are opening our first store in a liitle over a year. We are also growing our e-commerce. By 2020, Ikea will have doubled its size from 7 years ago. As you heard from the video, we are for the many people, we want to be affordable and accessible for the many, but we dont want to grow in any way , we want to grow the IKEA way.

6 Technology And for that we need to look into technology . Being for the many people and going into new markets where being for the many people in reality means something truly different than the markets we have had before we are faced with different challenges, in many of our new markets , our customers have a lot thinner wallets whilst being just as demanding if not more than the customers we have today. Demanding on quality, sustainability and a low cost.

7 Technology innovations
Raw materials Make-up Distribution & Sales Yarn Fabric Processing FORM LOW COST QUALITY FUNCTION SUSTAINABILITY In order to meet the challenges of scaling up for growth, lowering costs to reach more of the many with sustainability and consistent quality, something in IKEA which we call DEMOCRATIC design… then we need to ensure that we constantly strive for innovations in Technology… throughout the textile value chain. In IKEA we look at new and improved raw materials where innovations play a major roll in developing such alternatives. In yarn we look at better and new technologies in spinning and supporting processes, as well in fabric manufacture we are looking into 3D knitting, and weaving innovations. In processing we focus on more sustainable solutions which strive for waterless and reduced use of chemicals In make up we look at non/stitching systems as well as automated labeling and packing supporting consistency in quality, scaling up for growth and at the same time lowering our costs for the customers. In the distribution we look at smart solutions which can give us the agility to supply to a global footprint where our customers are located. In overall units we look at innovations in renewable energy solutions, zero liquid discharge, ……

8 Sustainability So innovations in technology are needed for us to grow, to be have good quality and low cost for our customers, but it also a very important part of the puzzle in sustainability. And to grow in the iKEA way means to grow in a sustainable way.

9 people & communities Energy & GHG Emission Water & Chemicals
Material & waste Under the heading of People and planet positive Our sustaibaility agenda in the supply chain for textiles is divided into four parts. People & Communities – Going back to ur vision Creating a A better everyday life for the many people. That’s been our vision for several decades. We want to play our part in creating a better life for the people and communities touched by our business. We have our code of conduct IWAY for example that is mandatory for all our partners that we work with. we are committed to upholding human rights in everything we do and want decent working conditions. Energy & GHG greenhouse gas Emission - IKEA strives to be energy independent by being a leader in renewable energy and becoming more energy efficient throughout our operations and supply chain. , We are phasing out coal where we can We moved last year 7 of our partners. and our partners are istalling solar panels, and adding biogas plants where they turn their food and other organic wastes into energy. We have managed to become 10% more energy efficient last year. We don’t stop there we have around 20 projects a year to improve efficiencies. Water & Chemicals - Water stress and scarcity around the world are making water an increasingly important business issue. We strive to minimize fresh water intake and to close the loop in our factories. Last year we saved 714 million litres of water or one days consumption in Denmark . We also work with reducing chemicals in pretreatment dying , finishing, and using ETP treatments kgs chemcials saved last year. Material & Waste - Lok at using the most sustainable materials, and going into a circular IKEA which means that we are looking for recycling the materials we use both mechanically but also innovative chemical recycling so that we have a good quality raw material to use again. Each product has a score card in order to move our development towards using sustainable materials. Today we view waste as a resource; and we are working towards recycling and recovery of waste. Material From 1 Sep 2015 all the cotton we use for IKEA products comes from more sustainable sources. This means that the cotton is grown with less water, chemical fertiliser and pesticide, while increasing profit margins for farmers. Cotton as a sustainable mainstream commodity. Bridge over to material direction…

10 Material direction and movement
© Inter IKEA systems B.V. 2016 *2015 oil based virgin 2030 oil based recycled So in order to take the next step insustainable materials we have recently launced a material direction. We have decided to be bold and to move out of fossil based or ouil based materials. Innovation is needed. In textiles we have looked into our usage of materials today and realised we have to make a big bold move for our planet and for our customers. We simply want to phase out our use of oil based materials in the future. We do not think it is responsible to use non renewable sources and we are getting increasingly worried about the reports on microplastics that are finding tehir way into our organisms in the oceans , the fish and then into us. We want to go from a range that consists of 50% oil based and 50 % cellulose based materials to an increased use of cellulose materials : more sustainable cotton, cellulose made fibres or wood based fibres produced in a sustainable way from well maintained forests (we are working with FSC) to making sure the production is clean. We also want to work with bast fibres : Hemp, flax and jute : old /traditional materials but we want to be able to process them in a more efficient way than before. :We will move into bio based materials. And as you can see, there will be The black oil based section that you see still remianing in 2030 will not be virgin, but either post industrial or post consumer waste. We also see that a considerable amount of the cellulose based materials will be from post industrial and post consumer waste. Circular IKEA. Challenging : how to collect the feedstock, how to identify it, how to ensure chemical content, how to recycle it without degrading the material etc… Looking for partners from universities, researchers , machine manufacturers , suppliers ,other retailers etc.. It might seem that 2030 is far away, but to make such a big move , 2030 is just around the corner. So we are making actions right now in order to be able to make this big change.

11 Key enablers Technology Sustainability Clear call to action at the end. Now you can clarify for them exactly what action they can take to if they want to grow their business. At IKEA we belive that the key to successful business and growth are innovations in technology and sustainability. And I hope that we will have many partners that want to join us on our journey . No matter who you will work with in the future, there are 2 things that I am convinced will be the key enablers for you to stay competitive on the market and that will give you the possibility to grow your business. Innovations in Technology, to secure efficiency, consistent quality and at the same time lowering the cost… Innovations in Sustainability, weather it be in innovative sustainable materials or technologies that will turn our waste into good quality raw materials, innovation into renewable energy sources and and processes that need less to no water and chemicals. At IKEA our vision is a better every day life of the many people and we think that Innovations in technology and sustainability is the key to successful business growth for many more of the many people for IKEA tomorrow and beyond.

12 To create a better everyday life for the many people.
