WHAT IS GOVINFO?
Free U.S. Government information for all
A service of the United States Government Publishing Office (GPO), which is a Federal agency in the legislative branch
Provides free public access to more than a million official publications from all three branches of the Federal Government
HISTORY
Beta website; began February 2016
When complete, replaces GPO’s Federal Digital System (FDsys) public website – both remain available now!

4. GOVINO Manages U.S. Federal Electronic Information
Public access - GPO combines modern search technology with extensive metadata creation. (mandated by Title 44 of the U.S. Code (44 U.S.C. Section 1911)
Content management – GPO securely controls digital content throughout its lifecycle
Ensures content integrity and authenticity
Applies digital signatures to PDF files so users can verify official versions of documents
Digital preservation 
GPO’s standards-compliant preservation repository follows archival system standards and ensures content is preserved for future generations despite technical failure, aging of hardware, or technological change.
GPO is seeking to become the first Federal agency to be named as a Trustworthy Digital Repository for Government information through certification under ISO  
“Title 44 of the United States Code (44 U.S.C. Section 1911) stipulates that public access to official Government information products disseminated through the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) must be maintained permanently…” under certain conditions. “GPO has assumed responsibility for the provision of permanent access to Government information products residing on FDsys servers.” GPO also archives federal agency electronic information products and creates PURLs so users will be redirected to the archived products if the information is no longer accessible on the agency website.”
