Patent range from years; exclusive rights Name must be short, and distinctive in sound. Distinctive enough not to be confused with existing drugs ® next to the name

Generic Name Generic is the name associated with a drug being “off patent” and other companies can produce and market the drug. Lowers the cost for consumers

Classification Classification
Definition: drug classes are group names for drugs that have similar activities or are used for the same type of disease and disorder. “VASTATIN” ANTIHYPERLIPIDEMICS (cholesterol) Lipids Lovastatin (Mevacor) Simvastatin (Zocor) Atorvastatin (Lipitor) Rosuvastatin (Crestor)

What the manufacturer intended the drug be used for “What is it used for?” Any one drug can have several; never affirm just one Megace (megastrol): class “progestin derivative” Indication: pallitive treatment of advanced breast cancer Off label use: appetite stimulant Contraindication: Who or situation when drug should NOT be used (example; an allergy or similar drug already in use) Side effects: Frequent, Occasional or Rare Serious Reaction: Warning for caution

Controlled Substance Controlled Substance Schedule
CI-CV based on level of addition CI - High potential for abuse and has NO accepted medical use in the United States. It may not be prescribed.(Heroin) CII - High potential for abuse and may lead to physical or psychological dependence , but has medical use in the U.S. (amphetamines, opium, methadone, codeine) CIII – Potential for abuse is less than CI and CII. Abuse can lead to moderate or low physical dependency (anabolic steroids, Vicodin, Tylenol #3) CIV – Potential is lower for abuse than above (phenobarbital, Valium, Ambien, Ativan) CV – Lowest potential for abuse (Lomotil, Phenergan with Codiene)
