2 Servanthood - The Example of Our Humble Lord John 13:1-17
John 20:31 - The purpose of the book Jesus, the eternal Word. His deity shown by: testimony, miracles, teaching

3 Servanthood - The Example of Our Humble Lord John 13:1-17
Opposition by the religious leaders has reached a peak following Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead Jesus and the disciples are in an upper room in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover

4 Passover with the Disciples John 13:1-3
Jesus leads the Passover as would a father with John on His right, Judas on His left and Peter near John John records Jesus’ foreknowledge and desire in verses 1-3 What Jesus was about to do would be an act of true love, not fond feelings of affection

5 Passover with the Disciples John 13:1-3
Christians will act like the world when they hold to and act on the world’s definition of love. Jesus knew He was about to suffer and be killed (Luke 22:15-16; Matthew 16:16,21; 17:22-23; 20:17-19)

6 Passover with the Disciples John 13:1-3
Jesus was facing the coming crucifixion with mixed emotions (John 17:5; Matt. 26:39; Heb. 12:2) Jesus knew Judas was planning to betray Him, yet also extend His act of love to Judas

7 The Service John 13:4-5 Because they wore sandals and walked, it was normal for a servant to wash feet on arrival. No one took the servant’s role to wash their dirty feet – so Jesus did it.

8 The Surprise John 13:6-11 The disciples were surprised by Jesus’ actions and Peter questioned it - vs. 6-7 Peter is embarrassed and refuses to have his feet washed - vs. 8 Jesus explains it is necessary if Peter is to have a part with Him - vs. 8

9 The Surprise John 13:6-11 Peter wants to be completely washed if it meant being part with Jesus - vs. 9 Jesus explains the practical and spiritual significance - vs Jesus cleanses us, but our “feet” get dirty walking in this world so we need to confess - 1 John 1:9

10 The Symbolism John 13:12-17 Jesus’ Position: vs. 13.
Jesus is both teacher (rabbi / father) and Lord (master) Jesus’ Action: vs Jesus’ service was an example to follow Jesus’ Command is to follow the example of being humble servants, not to practice ritual footwashing

11 The Symbolism John 13:12-17 Promised Blessing - vs. 17. Blessing comes from knowing & doing Knowing: 1) Jesus is teacher and Lord. 2) A servant is not above the master. 3) All must humbly serve Blessedness is a spiritual condition of being the object of God’s favor

12 The Christian’s Identity as a Servant Matthew 20:25-29
There is no Christian position so high that is it above doing even the lowliest job. Every Christian is simply the Lord’s slave here to do His bidding.

13 The Christian’s Identity as a Servant Matthew 20:25-29
You do not have to know your spiritual gift in order to serve. You learn your gifts by serving Your service is not limited by your spiritual gifts
