August 29, 2017 – get an iPad Study Quizlet flashcards for test (states of matter and heat transfer) Make sure all questions are answered from yesterday’s lab – have paper ready to be turned in (name on it, complete, etc) Temp in first trial increased Temp in second trial decreased Sample data: HOMEWORK: Study for test (ch 3 & ch 10, plus supplemental materials) 44 g 44 mL 49 OC 23 OC 25.5 OC 73 OC 60 OC
2
Test Tomorrow States of matter (shape, volume, energy, spacing)
Phase changes (know all 8 and whether energy is added or removed) Know heating curve and phase change graphs Know the gas laws Know the differences among thermal energy, heat transfer and temperature Know the three types of heat transfer Know specific heat formula
3
How does thermal energy move?
Metal Hot water & then cool Metal Cool water hot The heat from the hot water went into the metal, and then from the metal into the cool water The heat from the metal went into the cool water, and then the heat from the warm water went into the metal
4
Heat Transfer Lab Trial 1: Metal from hot water cool water
Observations should’ve seen the cube gain heat from the hot water, and then transfer that heat to the cool water Trial 2: Metal from cool water warm water Observations should’ve seen the cube gain heat energy from the warm water The cube should’ve gained more energy than the water because metals have lower specific heat capacities

Return to Review (don’t put away yet)
Phase Change GIZMO Gas Law GIZMO States of Matter & Gas Law Quiz Heat Transfer & Specific Heat Quiz
6
Phase Change GIZMO Activity A – Students determine the temperatures at which phase changes occur. Activity B – Students discover that adding heat energy causes molecules to move faster. The movement of molecules explains why ice melts and water boils. Activity C – Students discover how altitude affects phase changes.
7
Phase Change GIZMO Learning Objectives
Describe and compare the molecular properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Observe how heating affects molecular motion. Create and explain a graph of temperature change during phase changes. Explain why temperature does not change much during a phase change. Determine the boiling, freezing, and melting points of water. Find how altitude affects the boiling, freezing, and melting points. (Extension)
8
Gas Law GIZMO Learning Objectives
Observe the motion of gas molecules in a closed container. Discover how the pressure relates to the volume of a gas at a constant temperature (Boyle’s law). Discover how the temperature relates to the volume of a gas under constant pressure (Charles’ law). Discover how the pressure relates to the temperature of a gas at constant volume (GayLussac’s Law)
9
Boyle’s Law
10
Charles’ Law As the temperature increased, the volume increased.

August 29, 2017 Read the article about Non-Newtonian Fluids
Have your sheet from yesterday ready to turn in if you didn’t give it to me HOMEWORK: Finish incomplete classwork. Read chapter 4, section 2. USA Test Prep due Friday.
12
Flocabulary Lesson Log on to Flocabulary & complete the assignments
There are TWO assignments Each assignment has THREE parts Work on this week’s USA Test Prep if you finish early
