1 What is a discourse community ?

2 . Discourse community is what we call a group of people working towards a common goal in writing or any other common field of interest for example say a particular restaurant. .We aim to define this group of people in order to assist us in our own writing on the understanding of discourse community. For this purpose we take a look at The Starbucks at the Student Union in UNC Charlotte.

3 There are six different aspects of a discourse community:-
1 A discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals 2 A discourse community has mechanisms of intercommunication among their members 3  A discourse community uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback 4 A discourse community utilizes and possesses one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims 5 In addition to owning genres, a discourse community has acquired some specific lexis 6  A discourse community has a threshold level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discourse expertise

4 Welcome to Starbucks

5 The first point of discourse community is a common goal
The first point of discourse community is a common goal. It is very well known that Starbucks is a coffee shop and that too a dang good one. And it is reflected in the their Mission Statement above. In the interview we come across the goal of Starbucks. Although being a coffee shop the main goal of Starbucks is to serve coffee but the goals may vary according to the area they are serving, The types of customers they are serving like for example the goal of the Starbucks here at UNCC is make sure that people don’t fall asleep in the very first lecture they attend or to get themselves re-energized after a tiring day. 1.] ( accessed November 18, 2015)

7 LITERATURE Each community has a certain literature. This is specific to every different community. For example, the literature of a study group for chemistry class would be different from the study group of math class. In a similar manner different communities will have different literature, for example, Starbucks will have a different menu [ literature ], then that of a menu of a McDonald's. A regular customer would be fully aware of the menu and a person who may be going to Starbucks for the first time will have a lot options to choose from Starbucks is also known for its special drinks according to the season like the pumpkin latte for the Halloween season, which probably is its most popular drink. Hence, it is the literature that sets a community apart from the other similar types of community. The literature acts as the identity of the community.

8 COMMUNICATION In a discourse community, communications plays a very important role. Now, there are two types of communication in a discourse community. The communication which takes between the members of the community and the communication with the outsiders. It is important that the insiders follow the rules of communication in the community. If you look at Starbucks you can see there is set pattern of communication followed by the employees which is something unique to Starbucks.

9 COMMUNICATION WITH OUTSIDERS
The community has a certain manner in which they communicate with the outsiders. In Starbucks the communication is mostly a vendor-customer relationship. However, this particular Starbucks is slightly different from other Starbucks. Being a Starbucks on campus makes a lot of difference. During my observation I saw the employees were recognizing a lot of people, from which I concluded that they were regulars who come in at the same time everyday maybe.
