2 Solomon becomes king 1 Kings 1 - review
David was very old but neglected to have his son Solomon anointed king, though God had chosen him. Rival son Adonijah wanted to be king and staged a coup along with David’s general Joab and high priest Abiathar. Nathan the prophet and Solomon’s mother Bathsheba informed David of Adonijah’s coronation party. David immediately sent Nathan and Zadok the priest to anoint Solomon – and the people shout “Long live the king.” Adonijah fears for his life but Solomon spares his brother.

6 Joab’s indictment Murdered Abner – The noble commander of David’s initial rival – Saul’s son Ishbosheth (2 Samuel 2:12-32). Murdered Absalom – When David’s son rebelled, David explicitly told Joab to take him alive (2 Samuel 18). Murdered Amasa – David’s choice to replace Joab as general (2 Samuel 20). Betrayed David to support Adonijah (1 Kings 1).

7 Why didn’t david deal with Joab?
Possible factors… Family – Joab was his nephew. Guilt – David also was guilty of murder (Uriah). Leverage – Joab was one of perhaps only a few who knew of David’s role in Uriah’s death. Irreplaceable – Joab was a really good army general.
