1 Gender Related Activities in the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions
Date: 07 February 2014

2 A Gender Task Team and a Gender Coordinator were established in 2012 to promote gender equality both within the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS) and externally.

3 BRS Gender Task Team Promotes applicable United Nations and UNEP rules, regulations, and policies as to gender; Liaises with the UNEP Gender Focal Point on gender related issues, e.g. gender related training and development of the Global Gender and Environment Outlook (GGEO); Developed targets and an approach to gender mainstreaming within the BRS Secretariat; Developed a BRS Gender Action Plan (12/2013).

4 BRS Gender Action Plan:
Vision Gender equality is an integral part of the implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, including the secretariat activities

5 BRS Gender Action Plan:
Ensuring that the Secretariat’s programmes and projects are planned and implemented from the gender equality perspective; Promoting the consideration of gender issues in hazardous chemicals and wastes management at the national and regional levels; Developing a baseline on gender-related issues and measuring progress; Supporting staff in achieving a sustainable work-life balance.

6 BRS Gender Action Plan includes two parts:
BRS gender mainstreaming activities within the Secretariat (e. g. baseline of gender-related issues, training and skill development, gender equality in human resources management, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), monitoring and reporting, etc.) Implementing gender mainstreaming activities with partners (e. g. gender components in the Secretariats’ projects and programmes, Awareness-raising and outreach, Capacity-building through pilot projects, Conferences of the Parties and meetings of subsidiary bodies, Cooperation with other partners, etc.). )

7 BRS Gender Action Plan (example):
