Lord of the Flies Assessment
Do you think Ralph is an important character in the novel Lord of the Flies? You should comment on: how Golding presents the character of Ralph • how Golding uses Ralph to present ideas about people and society. AO1 Read, understand and respond to texts. Students should be able to: maintain a critical style and develop an informed personal response use textual references, including quotations, to support and illustrate interpretations. AO2 Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate. AO3 Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written.

Structuring your response:
The Dos: You need to show a variety of ideas – do not just focus on him representing civilisation, this is not broad enough for an entire response. You must use evidence to support ALL of your ideas – the better responses will look for evidence from throughout the novel to support an idea. Everything always comes back to GOLDING – it’s his work, his methods, his intentions. You need to stat weaving AO3 much more into your work now. The DO NOTs Do not re-tell the story. It shows no evidence or analysis. Do not just focus on one section of the story – you must select from throughout the novel. Do not write your response as if the characters were real, it must always be Golding’s presentation of Ralph, etc.
