Parts of a Map Map Projections
All of these terms will be tested on a Unit Common Assessment or the EOC!
2
Compass Rose - a circle or shape showing the principal directions printed on a map or chart
3
Key – Maps have symbols that stand for things that are drawn on a map.
4
Scale – shows a way to measure distance, either in kilometers or feet
5
Title - Tells what the map is about
6
*define the coordinate system –latitude/longitude
Grid – *define the coordinate system –latitude/longitude *Coordinates are numbered to provide a unique reference to features
7
On the back of your paper draw a large rectangle
8
Distortion: When a globe (or round object) is flattened , it changes the shapes and sizes of continents and bodies of water
9
Map Projections http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI36MWAH54s
Mercator – Poles are not shown as a point Has lines the same length of the equator Extreme distortion in the higher latitudes, Designed for navigation http//
10
Goode’s Homolosine & Eckert IV
Goode’s Homolosine/Interrupted Show shapes well Shown more accurately Interruptions allow land areas to be shown with less distortion Eckert IV Minor shape distortions Often used to map world climates or other themes
11
Gall Peters & Armadillo
Greatly distorts shapes Features near the equator are stretched vertically Armadillo – Gives students the impression of a map being peeled from a globe
12
Miller Cylindrical & Winkel tripel
Based on the Mercator Shapes are not as accurate of those of the Mercator Less distortion Used when mapping world time zones Winkel Tripel – Parallel lines result in a map with realistic shapes and minor size distortions
13
Mollweide Reminds viewers of a globe
Used for world distribution maps such things as crops, livestock, and people
14
Robinson & Van der Grinten
Compromise between Mercator and Mollweide Full projection forms a circle Poles are normally not shown Robinson – Presents a reasonable overall picture of the world Often used for educational materials
15
Thematic Maps Type of map or chart especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area. These maps "can portray physical, social, political, cultural, economic, sociological, agricultural, or any other aspects of a city, state, region, nation, or continent
