Roosevelt the Politician
VP for McKinley—Youngest man to become President at the age of 42—took over for McKinley after assassination. Served until 1908—gave way to William Howard Taft ( ) Reputation as being “Rough and Tough”—very popular with environmentalists. Once his job as President back—Too many scandals with the Taft administration. Runs in the election of 1912: Dem’s—Woodrow Wilson Rep’s—William Taft Bull Moose—T. Roosevelt!

Republicans divide the party, Democrats win for only the 2nd time in 50 years Wilson, a quiet and religious man works to keep America free of conflict in Europe. Finally forced into War—Will discuss more in our next unit Main goal of Wilson: “End War Forever” Forms and campaigns for the organization “League of Nation”—End war forever! America not ready to become “Watchdog” for the world U.S. only industrialized nation not to join! Today organization is known as the “United Nations”

The Assassin: John Shrank: American born—raised by his grandparents
Very small in stature. Fairly successful—Family had money—lived well. Worked as a writer—”4 Pillars of the Republic” Fiancée dies in a house fire! Loses touch with reality Felt he had to kill Roosevelt because of the “Dreams” he had! 2 main dreams—11 years apart. Come from the controversy surrounding the McKinley shooting.

The Assassination: Case Unfolds:
Shrank stalks Roosevelt to Milwaukee, WI Waits for him outside of his hotel—Gilpatrick Fires a pistol at him from point blank range—hitting Roosevelt in the upper chest. Roosevelt survives! Shrank found insane Roosevelt defeated for the Presidency-dies in Jan of 1919—blood clot.
