FDR’s Background A distant cousin to President Teddy Roosevelt.
Grew up in a wealthy family in New York.

As a child he liked to hunt, fish, ride horses, and sail.
Went to college at Harvard, and that is where he met his wife Eleanor.

He had a charming personality, deep voice, and big smile which always made him very popular.

Early Political Career
Assistant Secretary of the navy under Woodrow Wilson through WWI. Voted as Democrats VP candidate in 1920.

FDR Develops Polio As a young man, FDR developed a disease known as Polio. This caused FDR to lose feeling in his legs.

Governor of NY FDR won the Governor's race in New York in 1928.
This showed that his Polio was not going to slow him down. He was very popular as Governor, trying to cut taxes and help people in New York financially during the Depression.

Democratic Candidate: Franklin Roosevelt

FDR is Elected President
Elected President in 1932, during the height of the Great Depression.
