Progressive Era The Progressive Era was a period of social activism and political reform in the United States that flourished from the 1890s to the 1920s. Muckraker reform minded journalists who search for and expose real or alleged corruption, scandal, especially in politics.

Upton Sinclair Wrote “ The Jungle” filled with nauseating details that he had discovered about the meat/food packing industry. Nation was astonished about what Sinclair had found, including President Teddy Roosevelt. Book became a best seller.

Result of “The Jungle” President Theodore Roosevelt was sickened after reading an advanced copy of the book. He called upon Congress to pass a law establishing the Food and Drug Administration and, for the first time, setting up federal inspection standards for meat.
